This is the story of Gradni, a young elf orphan whose father was killed by the dragons of Zipacna. All his life he has been led to believe that dragons are evil, and since even before his father's death he has hoped to one day become a dragon slayer. But after being recruited for this very purpose by the military base of Delthurk, Gradni reluctantly begins to wonder if the dragons are not the villains he always thought they were. Alone and confused, Gradni is conflicted on which side deserves his loyalty- his own people who are the aggressors, but are offering him everything he thought he wanted, or the dragons whom he identifies with, but who killed his father? In addition, Gradni must compete with the giant Erdūn of the amesha race, who himself is being trained by a cult of dev people who have already eradicated one of the eight dragon species. Erdūn is also being imbued with the powers of the Fire Spirit Ta'ar, an entity whose feud with the dragons goes back generations.
